Become a better Listener!

Posted by SB Admin on 26 March 2015 in Meditation

Listening is very different from hearing. As simple as listening may seem, doing it well, particularly when disagreements arise, takes a lot of effort, and lots of practice. So how can you become a better listener?

Clear your mind

Being an effective listener requires a lot of focus and an open mind. Put your assumptions aside and listen with a caring, attentive nature.

Don’t just listen with your ears

Listening takes more than just listening with your ears. Make eye contact; listen with your entire body by showing attentive body language. Similarly, pay close attention to what the person you are listening to is saying with their body as well as their words-someone’s body language is a good indicator of how they are really feeling.

Let them finish

It is good etiquette to let the other person finish what he or she wants to say before you say your part-let them get out all they want to share before you butt in- or else you risk missing out on vital information and feelings that they hope to share

Confirm your understanding

It is important to relay what you have heard back to the speaker to ensure that you have understood them correctly. Doing so assures the speaker that you are on the same page and that you actually care about what they have to say.

Ask questions

It is important not to be careful with how and when you ask your questions- you should only ask them when you feel it is necessary. As you ask questions you will be able to make a significantly better contribution as a listener-no matter what the setting.

Remember, listening goes beyond hearing words. It’s an active process that requires practice.
