Cleromancy and divination
A lot to be thankful for
Cleromancy is defined in the dictionary very simply as divination by means of casting lots.
It involves an assortment of objects being randomly thrown and then interpreted depending on how and where they land.
Cleromancy is one of the earliest forms of divination and, throughout history, lots have been cast to make all sorts of life-altering decisions using items as simple as:
- dominos
- dice
- beans
Based on the principle that the universe has everything planned already, cleromancy is built on the idea that even the most seemingly random act or outcome has a particular significance or meaning.
Interpreting these seemingly random, but not random, outcomes and deriving meaning that relates to our lives is a very special skill in the psychic world, but that is what cleromancy is all about.
A lot of history
The origin of the word cleromancycomes from ancient Greek, where ‘cleros’ means ‘lot’ and ‘manteia’ refers to divination.
However, there is evidence of the practice existing as far back as the second millennium B.C. in China.
Throughout history, there are references to the use of random lots being used for divination, from ancient Rome to Germanic tribes in the first century, and from Biblical references to ancient West African religions.
Cleromancy has, therefore, been a nearly universal form of divination for centuries. In the earliest practice of cleromancy, animal bones were used to cast the lots.
Since then, seers have been known to use many different types of object to do their readings.
Anything with different colours, irregular shapes or unusual markings is fit for purpose, which means that everything, from pebbles to beans, has been used in this ancient art form.
As civilisations began to develop, so did techniques in cleromancy. From around the 12th Century, dominoes and dice were used for divination purposes, first in China and then throughout the world.
Cleromancy – All You Need to Know
How and why?
While there are numerous forms of divination, cleromancy is one of the most recognisable and mysterious.
The randomness of throwing dice or scattering beads, shells or bones is thought to channel the mystic forces of chaos to reveal an unadulterated omen from on high.
In earlier times, it was believed that the seemingly random act of casting lots actually indicated the will of God or other supernatural entities.
This meant that it was used by powerful people to predict what the future would bring and to make important decisions, from identifying a guilty person that had committed a crime to choose a particular course of political action.
In modern times, cleromancy is still mainly practised with the dice, usually to answer a specific question or choose a particular course of action.
There are many different techniques to casting the dice but the most common method is the two-dice system.
- This involves making a list of 20 possible answers – numbered from 4 to 24. A pair of ordinary dice is then thrown and their numbers are added together and written down.
- A second cast of the dice is performed, and their numbers are added to the first. The result is then matched to the number corresponding on the numbered list.
If you are searching for answers, you have come to the right place. Cleromancy is just one of the psychic tools that our experts have at their disposal and it is well suited to distant readings.
