What is it?

Palm reading, also known as palmistry or chiromancy, is the art of examining the creases, shape and features of your hand to provide insight into your life, your personality and your future.

Historically, this ancient practice was done when a person had a difficult decision to make or if they were experiencing hardships in their life.

It was thought that celestial beings – the gods and stars – determined the outcome of a palm reading and astrology still plays a major part in palm reading today.

Palmistry is different from many other practices within the psychic world, as it doesn’t require the reader to possess a psychic gift. Instead, they must be exceptionally well studied and highly skilled in the art of reading and interpreting the palm.

How does it work?

This ancient art form has developed over centuries, so as you might imagine there’s no simple answer to this question.

No two hands are the same and there are countless nuances and features that are open to interpretation.

The size and shape of the hand are divided into four elements: earth, air, fire and water.

Along with the hand’s various mounts and plains, these hand-types are connected to astrological influences that relate to life themes and determine what kind of person you are.

However, when using palmistry for divination, it’s all about lines. The four main lines of the hand are the Heart (or Love) Line; the Head Line; the Fate (or Destiny) Line and the LifeLine.

To determine their meaning, and divine what the future holds, a palm reader will analyse the length, depth, position and curvature of each line, as well as how they interact and intersect with one another.

Heart Line

The uppermost horizontal line on the palm is the Heart Line or Love Line. It governs all matters of the heart, from romance and sexuality to friendship and commitment and, not unlike matters of the heart; it is very complex and tricky to understand.

The positioning of the Heart Line is the first thing to look at. For example, if it begins below the index finger, it reveals contentedness in your relationships but, if it begins below the middle finger, it reveals the potential for restlessness.

The depth of the line relates to the significance of relationships in your life, while its length corresponds to the amount of time spent in a partnership.

Breaks or forks in the Heart Line can suggest multiple lovers, transformative bonds, or even infidelity.

HeadLine

The Head Line, located horizontally in the centre of the palm, reveals our curiosities and interests at the same time as indicating what lessons we still need to learn.

The depth of the Head Line relates to the complexity of your mental pursuits, while its length reveals the breadth of the topics you might explore.

A wavy line signifies progressive thinking; a straight line reveals a more traditional approach and a broken line can signify mental strife or, more optimistically, breakthroughs and epiphanies.

Fate Line

Also known as the Line of Destiny, the Fate Line is a vertical crease down the centre of the palm.

It reveals the degree to which your life will be influenced by external circumstances beyond your control.

Our palms naturally evolve over the course of our lives, but the Fate Line transforms the most so, whenever you experience a significant personal or professional change, take some time to see what your Fate Line is saying.

LifeLine

Contrary to popular belief, the LifeLine gauges your life’s journey, not when you are likely to die. Located underneath the Head Line, it reveals your experiences and vitality.

Its depth suggests the richness of your experiences while the length reveals others’ influence on your individual path.
