Before giving an opinion, ask whether the person wants advice or encouragement. If they want feedback, explain what works and suggest one useful improvement. “This is a stupid waste of time” tells them nothing except that you're capable of being an unsupportive jerk. You can be direct and helpful at the same time. Use your insight to help them improve, not feel worthless.
